The Bylas Community Food Project
All
Saints Episcopal Church in Safford has reached out to the Bylas community, a
community on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, for
many years by bringing food boxes at Thanksgiving and Christmas. These food
boxes give the people receiving them not only food for a holiday dinner but also
staples for the weeks afterwards. The members have always recognized the need
to do more and have looked for resources. This year through the assistance of
the Jubilee Ministry of the Episcopal Church USA, the Native American Ministry
Program of the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona, First United Methodist Church of
Safford, Sts Philips and James in Morenci, St. Stephen’s in Sierra Vista, Christ
the King in Tucson, St. Philips in the Hills in Tucson, and All Saints in
Phoenix, All Saints with the help of the other churches delivered almost
one-hundred food
boxes to Bylas over Thanksgiving and
Christmas.
Melinda
Weisser-Lee (Mindy as she is known
to the Bylas community) coordinated
this outreach with the San Carlos community health representatives in Bylas. Any food that was not used for the boxes was donated to CHAPS
Ministry, a local ministry to the homeless, for their food boxes.
All Saints’ priest,
the Rev. Dr. Eugenia M. Durham, who received her Doctorate in Congregational
Development in May, 2006, from Seabury-
Western
Theological Seminary, has long encouraged the members of All Saints to be
involved in outreach.
With her support, All Saints was recognized by the Episcopal Church, USA and named a Jubilee Center. The Jubilee Ministry was established by the national church in 1982 to assist churches around the USA in developing outreach ministries. Jubilee comes from the injunction in the Bible (Leviticus 25, beginning at verse 10) for jubilee years to restore to the poor their property. Today there are Jubilee Centers around the world as well as in the United States.
